Space Saving Storage For Your Home
Whatever storage space you have in your home, somehow it never seems to be enough. If your drawers are overflowing and your cupboards won't close, then start decluttering today. Once you've done that and there's still not enough room for everything, try some of these great space-saving ideas.
1. Get hooked up Put up lots of hooks on the back of doors - doors between rooms and wardrobe doors. If you like, make some simple drawstring bags hanging up small items such as toys or lingerie. For small items, fabric wall pockets that can go on the back of doors are also a useful investment.
2. Choose dual purpose furniture Choose items with storage room. Get a coffee table with drawers or use a blanket chest. Small chests and storage cubes also make great bedside tables. Choose a bed or sofa bed with built-in storage space and a TV bench with drawers. Consider high-rise beds with space for seating or a desk underneath. IKEA make great ones for adults as well as children.
3. Double your wardrobe space Add another rail in your wardrobe and double your hanging space. The easiest way to do this is to hang a lower pole off the main pole. If you've got a number of longer items like dresses, add the lower pole over half or three-quarters of the width of your wardrobe. Alternatively, try out some of the multi-hanger systems available from stores such as The Holding Company.
4. Create small-scale bathroom storage If you don't have room in your bathroom or toilet for a cupboard, use a small laundry basket or wicker hampers to hide away your spare toilet rolls, toilet cleaning equipment etc. If you don't have room on the floor, remember that small wicker baskets can also be fastened to walls and can look a lot nicer than basic shelves.
5. Create extra drying space To cope with all those wet towels that get strewn round the bathroom, add some small towel rails to the back of your bathroom door.
6. Make the most of your cupboard doors Use the space on the back of your cupboard doors for storage. Put up hooks on the inside of the doors of kitchen cupboards to hold items such as chopping boards and sieves. Put clips on the inside of larger cupboard doors to hold brooms, mops and tools. You could also check out the range of specialist back-of-the-cupboard-door items from specialist providers such as The Holding Company.
7. Use up the space under the bed Invest in some under bed storage where you can keep items such as extra blankets and out-of-season clothes. IKEA and Argos both have a good range.
8. Organize your paperwork Invest in some simple magazine racks to hold all those catalogues, magazines and items that need reading. Label them carefully and remember to have a regular clearout every month or so.
9. Make use of wasted wall space Use the wasted wall space near your ceiling. Put up some high shelves in your rooms to hold books, ornaments or - for an ultra-neat look - a series of small storage boxes.
10. Organize your shoes Avoid that pile-of-shoes-in-the-hall look with some great low-cost alternatives. Stores such as IKEA and Argos do a great range of shoe cabinets that fit close to the wall. An attractive wooden or rattan box can also work wonders.
